South Sound Reading Foundation (SSRF) expands Books by the Bay, its annual literary celebration and fundraiser, into a two-day Sasquatch to the Salish Sea themed virtual festival and auction happening October 23-24. Friday night features a conversation with Max Brooks, best-selling author of Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre, while Saturday offers a family-friendly talk with We Are Puget Sound author David Workman and photographer Brian Walsh. Signed copies of both books are available while supplies last thanks to Browsers Bookshop.

When children have access to their choice of engaging books and connect with characters, stories and topics that interest them, their reading skills improve so they can succeed in school and in life. The COVID-19 pandemic, closures, and gathering limits have impacted SSRF’s ability to deliver its usual programs, and reduced donations of both books (-20,000) and event income (-$40,000 est.) over 2019. Yet, demand for books is higher than ever. In response, SSRF has created virtual reading programs for families and a book ordering program that connects children with free, clean, age-appropriate and interest-matched books. SSRF also expanded its partnerships, sharing books through organizations providing essential services to children and families, and utilizing mobile shelving to provide safe, curb-side pick-up.

Championing reading together 20 minutes a day, South Sound Reading Foundation’s research-based programs partner with schools and community organizations to educate children and families about the importance of reading and strive to get free high-quality books into the hands of every child.
