The Principal’s Emergency Fund (PEF) fills an important resource gap for principals and educators looking to quickly assist low-income students who have urgent basic needs.

With one-third of Olympia School District (OSD) families living in poverty and nearly 300 OSD students homeless, the need for the PEF is undeniable. When school buildings closed this spring, the PEF became an even more critical resource to even more families.

You can help these families by attending our annual Principal’s Emergency Fund Breakfast at 8 a.m. on September 24, where you’ll hear from the very people who use it every day how it has provided a lifeline to their students. This year’s event will be held virtually.

In 2018-2019, principals utilized more than $46,000 in PEF funds to, among other things:

• Help keep families in their homes and ensure they can keep the heat turned on inside them.
• Assist children who need clothes that fit their growing bodies and are appropriate for the season.
• Put healthy food in refrigerators so students can come to school ready to learn.
• Make sure students have the opportunity to participate in after-school activities.
• Help students clearly see words and equations on the whiteboard in their classroom.
